Book Trailers... just like movie previews but BETTER!
What is a Book Trailer?
A book trailer is just like a movie trailer/preview... it is a short, highly enticing snippet of goodness that will make you want to read the book! It shouldn't give away any plot twists or spoilers, and it should be designed for our target audience: teens. Think of book trailers as visual, techie book talks.
Why Should I Make One?
Because they are fun! Also, this would be a great activity to do with your YAAB group. Your book trailer can go on FVRL's YouTube page and also on your branch's MySpace page. Maybe your book discussion group might want to make a book trailer for something they have read? Or, maybe your YAAB group would want to borrow a book discussion title so everyone can read the book they choose for the trailer.
If you want to see some cool book trailers other people have made, YouTube your favorite book and see what people have come up with.
Here is some useful information I read on a YA Listserve... I have not tried all of her links, but they should be helpful if you need software or tutorals.
there is already music built in that you can choose from. They actually have a decent range of styles. I find that it's a pretty straightforward program for the PC. You can find lots of tutorials out there for it, too, including:
Joyce Valenza, well-known in the media specialist world (and blogger for SLJ) has a great wiki about copyright friendly images and sounds. She does have notes at the top about citing sources, even if the copyright policies at the particular site are generous:
I also think image generators are huge amounts of fun--the ones where you make signs or magazine covers with your own text or images, and Joyce Valenza has a list of them at this wiki page:
Here is a link to a blog with step by step instructions on how she creates book trailers. It is l-o-n-g, but helpful.
Here's one I like for Perks of Being a Wallflower:
And here is a trailer done by the publisher for The Adoration of Jenna Fox... this is a little more professional than what we could do, but would be a good example to show teens what level to aspire to...
Don't forget!! FVRL/YA Services owns an extremely easy to use digital video camera and a tripod! Email Jen if you want to use it!
