Teen Idol

At VA, we've done a Teen Idol program three years in a row.  The program has had the same format each time.  We had a karaoke machine available for the kids to use and some CD's for them to choose from. Most of the teens brought their own music, played their own musical instruments, or sang A cappella.  There was a panel of three judges made up of two library employees and one teen from our YAAB group.  We had an MC, which made things transition smoothly and they announced library events between songs.  There was someone to run the karaoke machine and two people running the registration table.

What worked: Having the karaoke songs all listed in a book so the kids could go through them and pick their songs.  The MC would announce the performer to come to the stage and also announce the "on deck" person so they would be ready to go when their turn came.

What didn't:  Unfortunately the third year of Teen Idol we scheduled the event on a night of high school choir concerts so our turnout was very poor.  We were unaware of this until the night before.
